Rider Support Gravel Worlds

The locker room has always had something magical about it in cycling. The changing room, filled with the scent of massage oil and eau de cologne, was your first confrontation with your rivals. It was the space where you’d size up the competition: the shaved legs and the outfit. That’s hugely important in cycling. “Gesoigneerd” is what they call it in cycling lingo.

The Shimano Experience Center boasts “gesoigneerde” changing rooms and showers. And especially for the Gravel World Championships, these spaces are open to all participants until October 10. Folks are already making good use of the offer Shimano has extended to the gravel community. They’re coming from all corners of the globe to Valkenburg. We’re getting requests from Africa, the United States, Brazil, the Nordics, and of course from the Netherlands and Belgium.

Our Gravel Worlds hero is Roger Smeets. The former pro has qualified for the championships—a home race for him! He’s working at the Experience Center as Host Team Supervisor. As a former pro cyclist and in his role at the Experience Center, he knows better than anyone how crucial support for riders is. His team gets deployed during this period if someone has irreparable bad luck. Then the famous blue Shimano car races to your rescue.
