The Rainbow Tradition in South Limburg
The rainbow tradition began before World War II with the 1938 Road World Championships on the Cauberg in Valkenburg, won by Marcel Kint. A beautiful hotel in Valkenburg is named after him. In 1948, Valkenburg was once again the stage, with Belgian Briek Schotte claiming a solo victory on the Cauberg. In 1967, Heerlen hosted the World Championships, where Eddy Merckx triumphed after a thrilling battle with Jan Janssen. In 1979, Valkenburg hosted again, with Petra de Bruin and Jan Raas capturing the rainbow jersey. In 1998, Michael Boogerd narrowly missed the world title due to a flat tire; the victory went to Swiss rider Oscar Camenzind. That same year, Leontien Zijlaard-van Moorsel made an impressive comeback, winning gold in the time trial and silver in the road race. In 2012, Philippe Gilbert shone on the Cauberg, and in 2018, Wout van Aert claimed the cyclo-cross world title.

Many big names have qualified for the World Gravel Championships and will line up at the start in Beek on October 11 and 12. Who will be crowned world champion among the elite women and men, and in the various age categories?
